Story Elements
Story elements are important to think about when creating a story. The elements or pieces of a story like the plot, character, or the theme are what can make a story interesting. Below are some examples of different story elements.
Basic Randomizer for stories
Setting:
Where the story takes place. What is the setting? This could be in a town, a bedroom, at a school, in another country, anywhere.
Characters:
The actors in a story are the characters. They can be people, animals, insects, or something else. A story is usually based on characters. Characters make a story interesting because they have problems that need to be solved.
Plot
To have a plot, you need a dramatic situation to occur.
Two dogs and one bone . Both dogs want the bone. There is conflict. How the dogs deal with the situation helps to develop the plot of the story. When you summarize a story, you are often describing the plot.
Point of view:
This is from the perspective of the story teller. The author will determine how to have his characters ideas, thoughts and emotions be communicated. In general, the author will use one of these three avenues.
*First person:
The main character usually tells the story. In this case the reader only sees what the main character sees, or thinks. The story unfolds by way of a main character’s thoughts.
*Third person:
The person telling the story knows all; they know everyone’s thoughts and feelings. The third person is usually the author telling us what his/her characters are feeling, thinking, and why they are acting the way they do.
* Second person:
This is the author specifically talking directly to the reader, you.
Theme:
The central message or lesson learned from the story.
“The need to be loved”,, “to belong”, “To Know something”.
Conflict:
A type of problem in the story that the characters have to deal with. Conflict involves tension. If two best friends get into a fight, the two friends are now in conflict with each other.
Solution:
Characters try to solve a problem, or they try to live with it. If the character discovers there are ghost in their home, they accept the ghost, kick him out, or solve the problem some other way.
Author’s intent
What the book was like: serious, funny, scary, sad, or surprising. When the author writes a story, she or he, usually has a purpose.
