What is a noun?
A noun is a word that is the name of something. A noun is a naming word.
people: grandma, mom, dad, sister, brother, twin, teacher...
places: Rutland, Madison, kitchen, bedroom, park, United States...
Things: scissors, boat, house, tools, carpet, ...
Pronouns
What is a pronoun?
Pronouns are used in place of nouns.
examples of singular pronouns: I, me, she, he, him, her, it, you
examples of plural pronouns: us, we, they, them, you
examples of possessive pronouns: our, ours, their, theirs, his, her, hers, your, yours, my, mine, its
Verbs
What is a verb?
Verbs are words that show and express action. Verbs also connect a subject and a predicate (helping verb).
*Doing verbs: run, jump, laugh, cry, sleep...
*Saying verbs: said, yelled, stated, demanded...
*Thinking and feeling verbs: I like you. or She understands.
*Being, having (helping verbs): These words are used when something is being described. They help the verb in the sentence.

*Linking verbs: am, is, are, was, were, seem, appear, become, feel

What is an adjective?
Adjectives are describing words. Adjectives describe nouns. The adjectives, below, are underlined.
The bear sat in the street.
The old, brown shaggy haired bear sat lazily in the mud soaked street.

What is a preposition?
Prepositions are "place words". I like to think of prepositions as "Any place a cat can go?"

Conjunction
What is a conjunction?
Conjunctions join groups of words or sentences together.
Some conjunctions are: and, but, or, when, while, since, though, until, although, unless, because, whether
Adverbs
What is an adverb?
An adverb is a word that adds meaning to a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
There are adverbs that show place, time, and manner.
**place - I Told you to drive over there. (drive where? )
**when or time - They arrived at our house early this morning.
**how, or manner - The boy screamed loudly. ( often - ly words)
